What a frequency sweep can reveal

A frequency test helps you listen for dropouts, buzzes, rattles, sudden level changes, and device limits across the audible range. It is useful when checking new headphones, comparing EQ presets, or diagnosing a sound that only appears on certain notes.

The test does not produce a frequency response graph. Human hearing, headphone fit, playback hardware, room noise, and browser output all affect perceived loudness.

Safe frequency testing method

Begin at low volume and avoid turning up very high frequencies just because they seem quiet. High tones can be uncomfortable and may be filtered by the device or outside your hearing range.

For a controlled pass, run a slow sweep once, write down frequencies where you notice rattle or sudden changes, then retest only those bands at a lower volume.

Interpreting missing tones

Very low frequencies may be felt more than heard, especially on small earbuds. Very high frequencies may be limited by age, hearing history, sample rate, Bluetooth codec, browser processing, or the headphone itself.
